Life gives us unexpected gifts.
I was hoping Dearest Son
would be able to visit a few days this week and
a text came at work Wednesday around 11 saying, "I'm leaving now."
He arrived late afternoon and grabbed a coffee
with his Dad and
then we were going to dinner.
While waiting for him to return,
my phone rang and my "other surrogate" son Ivan
called saying. "I'm in town for a few hours,
can we get together?"
I squealed "Guess who else is here!!!"
So last night at around 6:30 I had both boys here on my porch
sipping wine and chowing down some great
Capriotti's sandwiches and laughing and catching up.
Heaven.
Ben and Ivan became best friends in jr high
and the two spent nearly every school weekend
and summer day here at my house,
because, well, Ivan needed to be here
with us and we wanted him here.
So birthed by someone else but
a part of this family forever nonetheless.
Insert big contented sigh here
________
now, if only baby girl could be here.
This distance crap sucks,
sorry,
but it does.
I want to be 3" tall and be able to
travel along in their pockets
now and then. Not forever,
just a little bit,
just to fill me up with that goopey
oh I love them so feelings to tide me over
until the real big hugs come.
Mom? Dad? I am so sorry I lived so far away,
even though it was beyond my control.
I am so sorry that I never came home enough.
This distance crap has always sucked.
I get it now.

Oh Z,
They say that the best thing a mother can do for their children is to let them go but, it's oh so hard, isn't it ? Our children only live less than an hour away from us so, not too bad but, they have to get on with their own lives don't they ?
You must be loving having the boys there with you, even if it is only for a short while. Enjoy every last minute of them being there.....I know you will. XXXX
Awww ((( HUGS)))) for you ...glad you got a visit nonetheless hope soon you can have all there at once soon! Enjoy your day ! hugs lil raggedy angie

Mornong Z,Oh my stars!!!! so so happy for you, family is everything. Ya,long distince sucks big time, enjoy while them at home while you can. Blessings Francine.
You won't believe who is sleeping in the guestroom right now: my son's best friend from California. Flew down here on Monday morning, we kept it as a surprise for my Son who almost had a heart attack when opened the door and found his Buddy! LOL!! Now, I better buy some more food: 2 big boys at the table!!!! Enjoy your Boys Time!
I am so happy you had time with both your boys! I hate that distance thing also. Now my Ash is across the country from me but I am blessed to see her a couple of times a year. Lucky that Sara and her family including my lovely Grand is closer. Hugs to you. Linda
Yes, it sure does Suck!
My daughter is moving back in June and I counting the days and hours until she is back where she belongs.
With me!! :) Heehee.
Im so glad you had such a wonderful visit.
I thought the hard part of having kids, was suppose to be raising them. But its not, is it??
The hardest part is letting go.
It is an odd feeling. On one hand we are so proud of them, we want them to go out and Live. And at the same time, we want to lock them up in their room and keep them with us forever.
;)
Big, Hug,
Tam
So happy for you Z ~ sounds like a nice day!
So glad you had that chance! I am lucky to have one daughter and grandchildren around the corner but the other one is 8hrs away! Hope it happens again soon!

Oh Suzan, this one just about brought tears to my eyes. Lucky you! Yes, the distance is hard and the distance isn't always geographic. Times like that are a treasure!!
Good looking sons! Your joy is infectious and makes me look forward to next week when Dan comes home!
So happy you had these fun moments to share with your boys.
I'm so glad your were able to have time with Ben, and Ivan, too. I felt so much like you do when my sons moved to California for 2 years and then when my daughter went to school downstate. It's a sad and frightening feeling to see them move on, but they truly do come back, maybe not in the way we want them to, but through phone calls, emails and visits. Life just continues to evolve. This is my poor attempt at making you feel it doesn't always have to suck!
Take care my friend!
XO,
Jane
Wow, that was a happy little bonus. Enjoy your days with your boy.
Dear Suzan, I love this, I have two boys who I adore...and it must be in the air or something, because both mine have been here for two suppers in a row....heaven!!! Yes, distance is bad, and my heart goes out to you as a Mom, I have mine close at hand, and I wish with all my heart, you did too! Savour every moment, much love, N.xoxox
My mom often complained - she had two sons that lived on different continents. I didn't get it either until my own kids grew up - their own town is ok, it's just when they find a different province that I hate it!
So happy for you to have had a wonderful visit with your boys...
What a wonderful surprise! It really sounds like a magical night of laughter and love, I can feel it in the post. As for the distance thing... I'm right there with you and after I am finished creating the time machine, the next on my list is a shrinking one for us! t.xoxooxo
We have a 'second son' with similar circumstances and it so wonderful when they are here together as they were last for my son's wedding. Brings back so many nice memories. The distance? That's why we are moving to LA area. The mountain is going to Mohammad. Soon perhaps. Ann
Very little is more fun then having our children around!!
Mine all live a 16 hr. drive away, and that is just too too far.
So when we have opportunities to be together it is like "the best day ever"
Oh yay for you! I am so glad you had a great visit. Does wonders for the soul doesn't it? Enjoy! Kit
how lucky for you to be surrounded by that love if even for a short time....
and distance does suck and i now also know how my parents felt when we moved so far away...well sort of. my kids are still close and can pop in anytime and they do, but the older i get the better i understand the joy of having them close by....xo
Technology helps with distance now, but it's not the same as a hug or having that empty room filled again.
My daughter and her family are nearby for now. My son is a 7 hr drive away. I feel your heart! Blog friends like you have helped me to fluff our empty nest!
What a lovely reunion for all!

I can so relate to this post and my kids aren't even that far away!
I know you loved having your "boys" with you for a bit. Hopefully your daughter will be home for a visit soon too.
Kat
P.S. You won my latest giveaway!
Awww.....It doesn't get much better than that.... Hugs ~ Robin
Well at least he can pop in more often now. One day you will all be close to each other again.....I know it.

so sweet, Z ~ very happy you got to spend some fun time with "your boys"~ / and I LOVE your post and pic of the bird basket. Beautiful.:)
Very Handsome sons!! I am glad you got to have them both home,it does the heart good to have our children home...even if it is for a little while...
OMGoodness, I felt as sad as you that your children live far away. I don't know how long I will be blessed, but my husband and I are sandwiched in a triplex, between our two daughters and their families. Which means.....I see our five grandchildren quite often. One son lives but a few blocks away, and one son lives 1,000 miles away. I get that distance sucks. What a glorious time you had to have had with the boys, I kind of felt giddy with the sheer joy of your explanation. Yes, you are so blessed.
